Surgical Technologists provide surgical care to patients in a variety of settings.  The surgical technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures.  The Technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation of tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive procedures.

The course includes an introduction to basic anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, and medical terminology.  Also included are courses which introduce the student to the principles and skills necessary to handle various surgical equipment and establish and maintain a sterile environment.

The Surgical Technology program is CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) accredited as of April, 2001.  Accreditation is a system for recognizing educational institutions and professional programs affiliated with those institutions for a level of performance, integrity, and quality that entitles them to the confidence of the educational community and the public they serve.  The American College of Surgeons, the American Hospital Association, and the Association of Surgical Technology cooperate to establish, maintain, and promote appropriate standards of quality for educational programs in surgical technology and to provide recognition for educational programs that meet or exceed the standards outlined in the Essentials and Guidelines for Accredited Educational Programs in Surgical Technology.  The Essentials are the minimum standards of quality used in accrediting programs that prepare individuals to enter the profession of surgical technology.  This accreditation means that the school has met or exceeded these standards.
